[CM] alsa trouble

I hate to say this, but I have no idea what to do -- my old sound card
had this same problem and nothing I tried fixed it -- I had to use either
Jack or the OSS emulation, which means there's has to be a way around
the problem, but I couldn't find it.  ALSA is exceedingly complex --
I think they're trying to solve too many different problems at once.
