I've gotten this message on the HDSP 9652 also, but it comes and goes for me
too. However, I have learned from experience that even when Alsa acts like
it loaded correctly using stop/start, I NEVER have gotten audio a single
time. I strongly recommend that you jsut reboot. (Sorry)

This message has had two causes for me:

1) Wrong firmware revision in the card so it doesn't match what the driver
knows about. What revision of firmware are you running?

2) If I compile Alsa with /usr/src/linux pointing at the wrong kernel, then
I'll get a message like this.

It should should up in /var/log/messages or in dmesg...

No, I fear they are more complex, like changing firmware. Is your machine
dual boot?
