On my dad's machine I built last year, in alsamixer we are setting the
Master, Master Mono and PCM faders to 74 and getting good results. I
have seen overload problems when you drive them up to 100. He's using a
Asus A7Nxxx (I don't remember the exact model right now) motherboard.
