I've just spent a few interesting days learning about ASUS P4P800
compatibility with Linux. I expect we have a few notes to compare!

This happens to me as well, and I don't know why, but grub seems to
lose track of labels after a kernel build/install.

Change the line in /etc/grub.conf for the
2.4.26-1.ll.rhfc1.ccrmacustom.test kernel that has the "LABEL=/1"
definition so that LABEL is the device that has the root partition you
want to boot from, like this:

        kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.24-1.ll.rhfc1.ccrmacustom.test ro root=LABEL=/dev/hda1 hdd=ide-scsi acpi=off

Of course, if your / is somewhere other than /dev/hda1, use that!

A tangental question... does your SMP kernel recognise the HT
enabled P4 on your system? Mine does not, saying it finds a BIOS
problem.
