You might want to check out:

Wikipedia probably has a much wider audience than you intend to have
(getting close to a billion page view a month), and manages to get
along pretty well with propritary/patented formats being completely
forbidden (minus a few lurking files that haven't been fixed yet).

This includes video too (which is in ogg theora)... though there isn't
much video content yet. There is, however, quite a bit of audio
content.
