You've hit upon why I'm running Gentoo for my day to day machine and
using a Planet/FC2 machine for music. The only repository I use for
Music is the Planet. If it's not there I pretty much just don't try,
other than jack_fst/VST stuff. I currently run FC2 so I think I'm not
far behind you in terms of having to do something major one of these
days though.

If I were you I'd wait maybe another month for FC4 support to get
ironed out and then move from FC1 to FC4. I wouldn't go to FC2 today
myself.

Under Gentoo there is, by the way, no upgrade. Once the machine is
built and running it just stays up to date. I've got my first machine
built over 3 years ago still running and it runs the same software my
latest machines run. The only big issues that seem to come along are
major revs of gcc, etc., but other than that it just works.

I hope Fernando one day starts supporting Gentoo like he does Fedora
Core. That would be cool to have his kernel with all the other goodies
that portage gives me.

Good luck with whatver you do.

Cheers,
Mark
