Hi 
I have done just what you are saying using Fervent as a starting point.
It really helps when you can see a working system.

It's well worth the money and the good thing is you always have to CD to
fall back on or re-install, should you need to.

I'm now trying the planet on my other machine with my M audio 2496 and
it's proving somewhat difficult as it wants to run everything as root!
