my setup here is a stock FC3 CCRMA install on an acer travelmate
4002WLMi with 1Gb RAM and 7200rpm HD. with my RME multiface, i can
record 14 channels at 96k without trouble using ecasound, and with only
occasional trouble using ardour. ardour only complains when i'm
recording very long chunks (on the order of an hour or so), and only
when i stop transport -- the audio is ok, but it gets overloaded writing
all the peak data.

i've not messed with priorities at all.... i just let fernando do his
thing, and it seems to work fine for me!
