A little follow-up on this:

per a suggestion from RME upport in Germany I downgraded the (PCI
card) firmware on the affected cards to a version from 2004, using the
firmware update tool on the driver archive section on RME's website:
http://www.rme-audio.com/english/download/drivers_archive.htm

Now they all work (Rev 1.8 and 1.9) with my Linux install.

If we're all lucky, Paul Davis will receive a brand new (external
interface, i.e. Multiface or Digiface) firmware from RME and can
incorporate that into ALSA.
