Is Pulseaudio running ?  ( On Fedora 9 it is installed by default )

Did you try "yum remove alsa-plugins-pulseaudio" ?

Or removing pulseaudio completely ?

Just a wild guess. Pulseaudio is potentially great, but also new and not completely without 
problems. (It took me weeks to get any sound at all with it on my fedora 9 system ... )
