Lenovo here as well. An old T61 for quite a while, now a T510 (my boss 
got a 4 core W510 which he is happy with). The T510 seems to work well 
but I guess it can depend on what is the current crop of components it 
is being built with - that changes all the time (caveat: to get the 
1920x1080 display which is great I had to opt for the nvidia graphics 
which means I have to run the binary driver, argh).

It is not completely silent, the fan runs normally at around 2300rpm and 
speeds up to 2700 when loaded. Not too noisy but it depends on what you 
need.
