Looking at both of those pages and I'm a little surprised how far away 
the heat pipes (and in the case of the W540 also the additional 
heatsink) terminate from the area when the heat is felt. Looks more like 
the heat should be centralised under the lefthand Ctrl or Super (Doze) key.

It also mentions CPU and GPU for the X230 but every review etc I can 
find only mentions it using the integrated CPU graphics so that seems 
strange...

But thanks for searching and linking your finding. Rather different 
designs in all by the looks of them so whatever my fault was it's 
probably not related in anyway.

How I think about it I can't remember the last time it got worryingly 
hot. Possibly even not since I migrated to Ubuntu Studio 14.04 (from 
12.04, which I moved to from PlanetCCRMA I can't remember when but have 
stayed on the list) some point around 14.07. Previously I would 
encounter random moments where it got worryingly hot for no reason at 
some point on most days...

But going very offtopic now, especially as this is on your list and not 
on LAU ;-)
