[Stk] stk 4.2.0 and DirectSound

Is it just me, or is stk 4.2.0 broken under windows?
I've tried various sizes, up to 16 8K buffers with rtaudio in examples
like threebees and get  terrible hiccups.
Multiple machines tested.
Seems to be the callback scheme?
I can get the blocking ticks to work in the examples i've tried.
Too bad I'm already past the middle of the quarter,
using Cook's textbook.   At least it doesn't depend on STK.
It looks like I'll have to  rework all the examples to can the
callbacks.  "Just use Linux" is not an option!
Maybe "Just use Dodge and Jerse with Csound" is a better option?
