You might want to try rebuilding the rpm database.  I think the command is
#rpm --rebuilddb
but you should check that.  Max RPM is a pretty useful resource when you get
into troubles like this.  I've had similiar situations when trying out some
rpms I built myself.  I think it can occur if the rpm process is killed half
way though an install.
