If you don't need firewire, you can try to disable Kudzu (searching for
new hardware tools), as root do:
$ chkconfig --level 345 kudzu off
 
It works on a VAIO PCG-GRT1716S, but we don't need FireWire....

By the way, maybe planetccrma-on-laptop web site could be helpfull for
laptop user ?
