I'd say the exact opposite. Only use VIA chipsets. Or at least, its
safe to use VIA chipsets on linux, VIA seems to provide spesification,.
And I have never had any problem with any via-boards on linux. Think I 
have used about 10 via-based machines with linux.
(Theres always someone who sometime, for some reason, has had some sort of 
problem with some sort of chipset.)

I'd say the exact opposite once more. When things as sound, video and LAN
is already placed on the motherboard, you don't have to worry about
finding/buying/configuring/installing cards. Less mechanics inside your
computer means more stable machine; lighter, more solid, less heat.
