What is the content of:
  cat /proc/asound/cards
  cat /proc/asound/devices
And what happens if you try to do:
  /etc/rc.d/init.d/alsasound stop
  /etc/rc.d/init.d/alsasound start
(as root)
And what is the version of alsa you currently have:
  cat /proc/asound/version
