[PlanetCCRMA] FC5 help with soundcards

I am slowly installing FC5 on my laptop and I am trying to figure what is 
the best way to tell various audio application to use my usb soundcard 
(an aging quattro). Setting MUS_ALSa_DEVICE works for snd, and I can get 
alsaplayer (works for soundfiles, but if I try to use it to play cds it 
crashes). I am trying to get audacity and gnome-cd player at this point. 
Is there a general gnome configuration invocation? environment variable?
other dark arts?
