It would seem to me that would point more towards rendering in your
graphics card (which might be affected by the kernel drivers for it, of
course). What do you have? Which driver? 

I think you're right.  Dropping down the screen resolution a notch cleared up the problem.
It's a Nvidia GeForce2 with 32Mb video ram.  I'm using whatever driver Fedora 11 decided to use.
