A couple of things to check to get started. Is alsa running? See if
there is anything in /proc/asound ("cat /proc/asound/cards" will list
all the cards that ALSA recognized). Does alsamixer see the cards mixer?
Start alsamixer and check the settings of all sliders and the mute
status of all relevant channels ("M" on top of the slider, type "m" to
toggle status).
